Guides Solar Power and Sustainable Development
This planning grant will support the development of the full proposal for the project which will provide renewable energy to the service organisation Girl Guides Association which services exclusively female youths throughout the country.
Local Civil Society Organizations like the BGGA have an important role to play in reducing the potential impacts of climate change. Recent hurricanes have demonstrated the vulnerability of our people and infrastructure to intense storms, rising sea levels, and storm surge. Our country can only benefit from improved access to renewable energy solutions and the BGGA is pleased to be part of the solution.
The project addresses barriers to transformation into a low carbon country.
1 High up-front cost of low-carbon renewable energy technologies, particularly for non-profit organizations such as the Bahamas Girl Guides Association which is heavily reliant on donor and Government funding.
2 Lack of awareness and limited opportunities to engage young girls and women in conversation about climate change and the simple actions that they can take to live more sustainably.
The BGGA is in the process of constructing its new headquarters on West Bay Street and is also revamping Camp Discovery, our 8-acre campsite on Marshall Rd to actively engage members in outdoor and environmental activities. This provides us with a tremendous opportunity to address climate change and its impact on low-lying, small island developing states, like The Bahamas.
