Promotion of Biogas cooking in rural homes of Chimmong to reduce GHG emissions and enhance health of women
Chimong comprises of five chiwogs ? Chimong, Pangthang, Lungkholom, Nyaskar and Chiphung ? is one of the remotest gewogs in Pemagatshel which has a poverty incidence of 13.7% (PAR 2017). Almost located together is the Pangthang and Chimong chiwog. It has 79 households combined. While the Pangthang village is located on the steep slope areas, the proper Chimong village, though is on the gentle slope, is also vulnerable to landslides as head side (towards east part) of the village is characterized again by steep slopes. Firewood is still used for heating and cooking despite the village has electricity coverage because of their inability to afford to buy LPG gas cylinders. This demand for firewood, though significantly reduced if we compare to the pre-electricity coverage times, only adds to the vulnerability of landslides. Moreover, the two villages have already started facing water shortages and cutting down the trees for firewood will only worsen the situations in the years to come.
Further, 60% of the household members from existing 79 households are women who are involved into household chores at home daily and are exposed to the harmful effects of smokes.
Hence this project would not only contribute to the overall poverty reduction but specifically to reducing GHGs as the cow dungs, the source of methane gases, shall be used for biogas, promoting social inclusion as the 60% of the members of beneficiaries are women and community landscape conservation of the two villages as the environmental degradation shall be minimized. It will also enhance the capacity of the local people as the skills in construction and installation of biogas plants shall be gained in the process of involving themselves. All these have linkages to the SGP?s overall objectives while it also ensures sustainability as the cooperative members are required to rear atleast one jersey cow each to contribute to the cooperative production as well as to reap the benefits of cooperative as a member.
Rationale: Despite 100% grid electricity coverage, people of Chimong and Pangthang villages use firewood for cooking. Thus women are exposed to harmful effects of smokes. Therefore, construction of biogas plants with a capacity of 6m3 is proposed. It will contribute to the SGP?s objectives of low carbon energy access co-benefits, promoting social inclusion. This project shall also provide platform for people to acquire knowledge and skills in biogas construction.
Problem Statement: 1. Forest degradation through cutting of trees for firewood
2. Women getting exposed to harmful effects of smokes
Objectives: 1. Reduce pressure on forest resources
2. Prevent women from getting exposed to smokes
Specific objectives: 1. Construct micro biogas plants at household level
Expected Outcome: 1. Reduced dependency on forest resources for energy
2. Enhanced capacity on construction of biogas plants
3. Prevented women exposure to smokes
Indicators: 1. Number of communities demonstrating/deploying low-GHG technologies
2. Total value of energy services (biogas) provided
3. Number of (indigenous) people directly supported
