Introduce Sustainable Land Management Practices to Illukkumbura and Mahalakotuwa sites.

There are self-sufficient societies with a nourishing culture amongst the isolated villages of the Knuckles mountain range in the Laggala Divisional Secretariat Division in the Matale District. The region has its own indigenous medicine, local food traditions and socio-cultural traditions. With the modernization of the society, the socio-cultural norm that preceded it, is in decline. The project aims to protect indigenous knowledge and social values for the benefit and sustainable use of society.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Notable Community Participation

Priority will be given to youth, women and low income people in partnerships and decision making in the project activities to ensure better transparency, sharing responsibilities and to achieve maximum community participation and to distribute project benefits equally among the community.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Soil conservation practices such as stone bunds and live fences will be applied for the lands of the beneficiaries. Minor cash crop plants and fruit trees will be provided for planting in these lands. The project will provide seeds, plants and planting material to beneficiaries to establish 50 eco-friendly home gardens. 10 women will be trained and facilitated to make handy crafts using ola leaf and reed. This will generate alternative livelihoods for the community

Capacity - Building Component

The community will be made aware of bio diversity conservation and enhancement of eco system services through awareness programmes in village level. 2 practical training programmes on soil conservation will be organized. Capacity building of 10 women on making ola leaf handy crafts.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project proposes to capture traditional knowledge related to bio diversity from the community and document it. 2000 copies of the publication will be disseminated.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

The project will work with local communities closely, therefore use of local language will be a primary factor for conservation activities. Community members possessing traditional knowledge related to bio diversity will be identified and their knowledge will be documented and published.
