Solar Power Excess Co-benefits

The main goal of the project is a demonstration of the solar energy benefits in providing hot water supply to prevent climate changes.
Specific tasks of the project are:
1. Installation of the solar system for water heating in the student dormitory in Zaporizhya Electrotechnical College of Zaporizhya National Technical University.
2. Distribution of information about the project to raise awareness of the community regarding the use of alternative energy sources.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results. Overall 31 women and 29 men took part in the project.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Informational materials about the project were distributed in the media, among citizens and representatives of the business sphere. Two round tables and a presentation of the project were also held. These measures raised awareness of the community regarding the use of alternative energy sources.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Installation of the solar system for water heating in the student dormitory in Zaporizhya Electrotechnical College increases its energy efficiency and contributes to saving the climate reducing harmful CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

Policy Influence

The implementation of the project has a significant impact on the formation of new social relations between the community and local governments. After carrying out theoretical and practical work on the beginning of use of energy saving technologies the project of the created mechanism of increase of energy efficiency of typical public buildings is be developed. It is possible to implement a similar project in other cities of Zaporizhya region and, accordingly, to spread it on the steppe landscape, as the problem of using outdated technologies is very relevant in small towns, and geographical and climatic conditions are very similar.

Notable Community Participation

The territory of the demonstration project was in the student dormitory of Zaporizhya Electrotechnical College on the initiative of the trade union of students, educational institution and community of Zaporizhya.

Project Results

The main goals of the project were achieved:
1. A review of technical and regulatory documentation was conducted (passport of the student dormitory of Zaporizhya Electrotechnical College of Zaporizhya National Technical University, building diagram). Design and technical documentation for the installation of an all-season solar hot water system was developed.
2. An all-season solar hot water system and the necessary additional equipment for its installation were purchased. It was installed and put into operation.
3. Information about the project was posted on more than five Internet information sites. Two round tables to promote the results of the project were held.
4. The presentation of the project "Advantage of solar energy" was held, which disseminated information obtained during the project, exchanged experiences with other organizations and representatives of various projects.
5. 1,500 items of information booklets were printed and distributed by volunteers and student union representatives.
6. A solar-powered Power Bank with UNDP GEF SGP in Ukraine logos was manufactured to demonstrate the use of solar energy in everyday life.
