Improve and maintain ecosystem services by strengthening participatory land use planning and management of wetlands of Colombo.

The Colombo Metropolitan Region losses 1.2% of wetland per year as the efforts to conserve existing wetlands are minimum and garbage and waste water are dumped to the wetlands. Thus, this issue will be addressed and vigilant committees will be created and guided by CEJ. Mobile App which will be created under the project will be introduced and complaints related to wetlands will be collected through the app. As well as discussions will be move onto National Conference on wetland conservation.

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

CEJ carries out its programs through its science and legal sections. Therefore we have the necessary scientific and legal competence. In addition to that we also have the media support. Formulation of vigilante committees and providing the necessary guidance to them will build the capacity of the communities to defend wetland destruction in the area. During the project we will improve the capacity of mediators to resolve wetland related issues. Mobile App which will be developed under the project will improve the capacity by establishing a smart and quick complaint mechanism.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Community meetings will be the main mode of communication. We will target (30 * 20) people directly to raise awareness. In addition to that we will raise public awareness through social media and Website. In addition to that we will produce awareness materials (leaflets/brochures/posters) and disseminated among the public, schools etc

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

Knowledge will be shared during the National conference on wetlands which will be organized at Colombo with the participation of Professionals, government officials, academics, general public and the other GEF/SGP/Grantees. SLLRDC, UDA, CEA, Agrarian Department and Wildlife department have different mandates in relation to wetland conservation. Existing legal and institutional gaps in wetland conservation will be a knowledge product which will be produced by the project.

Notable Community Participation

The project will involve the communities living around the wetland areas to identify the wetlands for conservation, to identify the threats and challenges and suitable actions. Community will be mobilized to form wetland conservation vigilant committees and build a network among them and youth will play a major role in these vigilante committees.

Gender Focus

Urban Community is present in the project area. Most of them are employed in government sector, private sector or doing business activities or providing skilled/unskilled labor. Some people also engage in agricultural activities full time or part time. The project will involve men and women from all social classes living around wetlands in wetland selection process, awareness-raising activities and in wetland conservation vigilant committees.

We will not directly plan to develop socio ? economic activities or introduce alternative livelihoods activities through the project

Policy Impact

Yes, Round table discussions planned under the project with the participation of Government officers will expected to have policy discussions and make policy level decisions. National level conference on Wetlands also is expected to have policy discussions and make policy level decisions
