Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

? The main objective of this project is to empower Tamil , Muslim and Sinhala women who are engaged in manufacturing dry fish with low income in pier fisheries harbour of Thalai Mannar Sustainably. We will give 30 solar heat ovens to these women to dry fish. We will provide each group with on oven and the capacity of the oven is 250kg. So from this 250 kg of fish they will be able to produce. 180-200 kg of dried fish. So they can get an income of Rs. 20000/= daily by selling a kilogram of dry fish at Rs. 100/= so each group will earn Rs. 4000/= daily. There are no latrines for these communities on the beach for that purpose these women have to go under a Palmyrah tree or into a thicket neat by. Under our studies, we have decided to construct 04 latrines on the beach for these women. All these beneficiaries are doing their business and living in very small thatched huts. Their floor is sand of the beach. There fore their babies are always ill. So we have built four small fishing huts for these women. Further more, we have planned to make gardens with these beneficiaries.

Policy Impact

In pier area the fishermen caught fish close to the beach only. they did not go far into the sea. So there was no mush fish, or big fish in the area. So after a discussion with Navy and the fisheries office, fish close to the beach was banned.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

In this project the beneficiaries are Sinhala , Muslim and Tamil women. The men and children of their families are indirect beneficiaries. We have held several training programmes for these beneficiaries. Because of their lack of knowledge we have held training programmes on mobilizing, mutuel living, saving system, keeping accounts marketing and gender equality. These training programmes have increased their knowledge and we have given own permission to men and the children to take part in them. So these people have got used to do savings, mutual living, cooperation and keeping accounts. Also women's leadership too can be seen in this area and poor women have become business women.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

In this project the service of the women is very important. They work hard in the sunshine with difficulty. We hope to make a video programme to show the life style of these women

Notable Community Participation

There are 100 beneficiaries for this project. We have decided to employ a daughter or a son of each member in this project. Therefore the participation of youth definite in project activities and at the meetings of small mobilized groups. So there are about 61 young women and 39 young men in this project

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

There are 100 beneficiaries in this project and all of them have been divided into small mobilized groups. Each group get together once a week a and do discussions and savings. At the meetings they discuss about the problems. Solutions progress and the weak points of the project. So their work will be published among the people. As well we have planned to display 25 boards saying "Best Dry Fish from the Beach of Peir" in Mannar, Thalai Mannar and Pashalai. We hope to increase the sale dry fish and the women's income through that, when people and buyers see now dry fish is produced, it will be published all over the country.

Capacity - Building Component

There are 100 beneficiaries in this project. All of them are employed in the pier fisheries harbor for cutting fish and drying fish. These women are drying fish under sundering system. So they cannot dry fish in rainy seasons at all. So animals dung, germs, black some coming from vehicles are mixed with this dry fish. So the communities engage in dry fish manufacturing are ready to sell their dry fish at low prices. These women were in need of a healthy method to dry fish. We give 30 ovens to these women on their need to fulfill it by 100%

Gender Focus

There are 100 beneficiaries women in this project. They are engaged in cutting and drying fish while the young men and women are helping their mothers. All the men of the families bring fish form boats, sell fish in towns. Salt the fish and wash the salted fish with salt water.
