Complex application of low carbon and energy-efficient technologies in Dzoragyur community of Lori region

The project aims at reducing pressure by local population on neighboring forests through application of low carbon and energy efficient technologies in Dzoragyugh community of Lori region. The project has three specific components: i) improve functioning of forest ecosystem services, ii) demonstrate possibility of reducing human intervention in forest ecosystems in the context of climate change mitigation through solar energy technologies, and iii) increase awareness of local population on the use renewable energy sources and energy efficient technologies.
To achieve the above-mentioned, the project is planning to demonstrate low carbon and energy-efficient technologies successfully piloted by the SGP, namely, application of PV and solar thermal systems, as well as use of energy-efficient wood stoves.

Project Characteristics and Results

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

?Lori Student Union? NGO will ensure transfer of knowledge and lessons learned on application of energy-efficient technological solutions during the implementation and upon completion of the project. The project staff will share the experience gained on installation and practical use of solar systems with key stakeholders, including decision-makers, and community members interested in investing in energy-efficient technologies. Collaborating with the Armenian Center for Green Technologies Foundation will ensure experience and knowledge exchange not only through installation works but also at practical trainings and workshops conducted for community members and NGO staff. It is also expected to involve youth from Vanadzor and adjacent communities in workshops and trainings on application of low carbon technologies.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Information of the project process and results will be disseminated via ?Fortuna? local TV and the official website of Lori Regional Administration. ?Lori Student Union? NGO will information and knowledge sharing through publication of brochures and leaflets, as well as conducting seminars and trainings on energy-efficient technologies and use of renewable energy sources.

Capacity - Building Component

Lori Student Union NGO will use the SGP?s ?low carbon energy access? practical experience and knowledge materials incubated so far for its capacity building activities. The project plans to conduct as series of seminars and practical trainings for the NGO staff, beneficiary schools and preschools staff, community administration and ordinary people on the ?green? energy solutions and associated co-benefits. Basic educational and awareness raising sessions on greenhouse gases and renewables and energy conservation to help mitigate climate change will be also delivered to the beneficiary schools and pre-school children.

Replication of project activities

The amendment of the RA Law ?On energy saving and renewable energy? laid basis for promoting the solar energy use applications. It is envisaged that the project results will attract individuals and businesses to replicate the low-carbon technology as a viable alternative to firewood in Lori region.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The community administration has committed to direct all funds saved due to implementation of energy-efficient measure in Dzoragyugh community to further increasing the buildings? energy performance. Moreover, use of energy-efficient wood stoves will ensure up to 30% saving of firewood, thus contributing to the well-being of local population.

Project sustainability

The operation of the solar systems in kindergarten and school of Dzoragyugh community will ensure significant monetary savings that can be directed to cover the needs of the educational institutions and improve energy-efficiency of the buildings.

Notable Community Participation

The project direct beneficiaries are schoolchildren - 21 girls and 21, kindergarten children - 13 girls and 22 boys, as well as institutions? staff and parents. It is anticipated that the commnuty youth will have an active participation during the installation works of the solar systems and implementation of the energy conservation measures in the building. This will ensure sharing of information and knowledge sharing process among the community members.

Gender Focus

The project targets different gender groups. Specifically, there are 13 girls and 22 boys in Dzoragyugh community kindergarten and 21 girls and 21 boys in the school. The staff of the educational institutions comprises of 14 women and 10 men. The community population is also evenly divided: 173 women and 162 men.

Project Results

The project will produce the following results:
? Solar PV system with 5 kwt capacity and water heaters with 300 liters capacity are installed in the community kindergarten, excluding use of 7m3 of firewood for heating and preventing around about 5 tons of CO2 emissions;
? Solar PV system with 10 kwt capacity is installed in the community school, excluding use of of 20m3 of firewood for heating and preventing around about 9 tons of CO2 emissions;
? Use of energy-efficient stoves by 95 community households reduced consumption of firewood by 30 %;
? Savings from systems operation are directed to increasing energy efficiency, dissemination of knowledge on EE technologies and solving social problems of beneficiary entities.
