Global Warming Campaign - chance to change our future

The project?s overall objective is to reduce GHG emissions and to increase the use of renewable energy, such as solar, wind and bio-energy sources by developing and implementing innovative technologies and methodologies, through promoting low-cost environmentally friendly practices among general public on community level.

Project Characteristics and Results

Policy Impact

A community-government dialogue, also Local Government financial contribution to the demonstrative micro projects on climate change impacts, mitigation and adaptation strategies will contribute to the government awareness rising and incorporation of these issues into municipal plans. Finally, the production of an electronic guide will ensure awareness rising of rural communities and school children/teachers across the country, while the dissemination of success stories on demo projects through networking forums and web-resources - their replication elsewhere, including all priority landscapes

Notable Community Participation

As far as one of the target groups of the action are community level eco-clubs (mainly school based), the youngsters, especially from higher classes will be actively involved in project activities. In total number of eco clubs participating in the action would be 15, meaning that approximately 90-100 young people will participate in different project activities: awareness building trainings/seminars; designing and implementation of environmental micro projects, forums and camps.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Local people in different Georgian regions still use wood for heating the houses and cooking, which is burnt in low efficiency stoves. In addition to this building designs are low energy efficient as well. Climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies, including different models of renewable energy, building improvements, renewable technologies and etc., which the project will promote, are low-cost, environmentally sound practices that individual households, schools, kindergartens or villages can apply easily.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

The communication strategy is very important component of the action and it envisages: - regular presentation of project results and successes through available media means (local TVs, radio and printed media) - Utilization of social media through web and face book pages developed at CSRDG (web page of Community Development Resource Center ? CDRC.ge) - Discussion of project results and success stories at wide format meetings and forums (Community Leaders Annual Forum)

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The project has a separate activity for knowledge sharing and replication. More specifically, project successes and lessons learned will be shared with various CBOs across the country through annual community forums and an eco clubs camp. More than that, all knowledge products including training modules and electronic guidebook will be posted on CSRDG? and CDCR?s web-sites and face book pages. Joint visits to demo sites will be organized with participation of CSRDG and UMP management, GEF SGP manager and steering committee members.

Gender Focus

The project will ensure participation of female members of communities in target community groups, school and preschool teachers (80 % of them are female) and eco clubs and their engagement in trainings, networking and knowledge sharing events and micro-grants. More than that, participation of representatives of leader women?s community centers supported by CSRDG in target communities will be mandatory. At the same time while identifying the community leaders and activist in other communities, the attention will be paid on involvement of both women and men in project activities. This will ensure gender balance in the action and the equal benefit of man and women from project results.

Project Results

Following results/outcomes are expected from the project:
1. Target communities, including school children, teachers and community leaders in Kakheti, Samegrelo and Guria are successfully involved in educational programs (trainings/workshops) ?Combating Climate Change: Energy Saving and Carbon Emission Reduction in Buildings? for increasing their awareness about climate change and its impacts.
2. Up to 5 energy efficiency improvement micro projects are implemented
3. Rural communities, including youth across the country are aware of the lessons of the project and its successes.
more specifically:
- 15 key community/CSU group and eco-clubs members, composed of 120-160 persons, of which about half are females strengthened and actively participate in project activities
- 6 meetings with local key stakeholders including local government representatives (one each region) organized
- About 120 students and community leaders take part in global warming trainings/workshops.
- About 60 school teachers take part in global warming trainings/workshops.
- One electronic guide book for exploration of renewable energy and examination its advantages and disadvantages prepared.
- Three energy audits (with audit reports) conducted
- Up to 5 joint eco clubs and community demo projects/green spaces implemented in protected areas and/or in their support zones
- One climate change session at community leaders' forum and eco clubs forum organized, with participation of 50 CB0 and 50 eco club members, of which at least 50% are female
