The Barana upland forests and catchments are well-known tourism site but this has been going on without much coordination and any support from the government. Activities undertaken within the sites includes; bird watching, forest trekking, Mataniko River trekking, vintage view visits and river kayaking for Lunga and Mataniko Rivers.
All these activities have been going on without any coordination with the community. The recent designation of some parts of the upper Lunga and Mataniko Rivers as the Barana Community Nature Park by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Pacific Ecosystem-Based Adaptation to Climate Change Project (PEBACC) Project has made the community of Barana more organised. The community in interest of sustainable managing the nature park would like to extend the work on sustainable land use and eco-tourism by strengthening community understanding and thus generating a sustainable income for the community. The community would also like to embark on managing land sustainably by improving subsistence farming practices so as to reduce deforestation and land degradation.
