The Establishment of a sustainable national medicinal herbs programme with value added processing for Saint Lucia with its locus at Morne Repos.

This Planning Grant will assist the grantee in designing a national sustainable medicinal processing system in which rural persons and others can participate. Project activities will include research, workshops, meetings, training, and the acquisition of legal rights to lands for the project. The group will also aim at learning about permaculture and organic methods. To assist with project implementation, the group will have a part-time mentor.
Three major outputs of this project would be the establishment of a Traditional Medicinal Advisory Committee with at least one Medical Doctor trained in alternative medicines as a member, the increase in knowledge of permaculture and raising sufficient co-funding for the FG phase of the project.

At the Planning Grant level all of the steps can be replicated because they comprise research, training, and building partnerships and coalitions.

At this stage the project is not yet ready for a communications plan or to increase public awareness.

Attempts will be made to interview the oldest people in the community on types and uses of traditional medicines.

Project Results

This planning grant completed the preparatory phase of the project., with the ultimate goal of establishing a national network of organic herbal producers with an agro-processing facility to HACCEP standards at La Pointe, Mon Repos.

The following results were achieved: (i) Preliminary design of a HACCP compliant agro-processing facility was completed and approved; (ii) A central medicinal garden was designed using permaculture principles and methods; (iii) Members were trained in HACCP requirements and permaculture approaches; (iv) Partnership was established with the Small Business Enterprise in the Ministry of Commerce; (v) Communications links were established with a Medical Practitioner; and (vi) the Full Grant Project Proposal was prepared and submitted for approval.

During project implementation a total of 5 persons were employed (4 men and 1 woman) were employed and earned a total of US$4416 (US$4072 ? men; US$344 ? women).

A total of 30 persons were trained in permaculture and food safety (Permaculture = 21 ? 9 women and 12 men; Food Safety = 6 women and 3 men).

The group learnt that in order to maintain a high level of interest, there should be training in project management and workplans should be used as a mechanism to ensure division of labour and monitoring. The group also learnt that a detailed stakeholder analysis was needed to ensure that all influential partners were involved from project inception.
