The main goal of the project is to improve the biodiversity of the Khvanchkara region by Landscape planning and setting 4 ha nursery and small scale greenhouse for bringing seed varieties such as chestnut, peas and nuts and running nursery and care about the biodiversity with active community involvement

Project Characteristics and Results

Capacity - Building Component

Established first nursery in Racha region, will contribute to the improvement of biodiversity. More precisely, degraded chestnut trees will be restored by deforestation. Walnut trees in the process of drying out will be replaced with your plants grown in the nursery. Local public school students will be involved in this process. In the future, it will be possible to grow other varietis of trees in the nursery, which will contribute to restore biodiversity in the Khvanchkara varieties distribution area.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

Establishment of first nursery in Racha, will to some extent contribute to the improvement of the socio-economic conditions of the local community. The nursery with its equipment, irrigation system and simple construction greenhouse, will be the place which will be actively involved in improving biodiversity in the region. It is also possible to employ a local community in the nursery depending on their willingness.

Significant Participation of Indigenous Peoples

Indigenous people were actively participated in the project activities. Project envisaged inclusion of local communities in different project activities. Local public school students were actively involved.

Notable Community Participation

Project envisaged inclusion of public school students during the project implementation to raise awareness on environmental protection, biodiversity, agroecology and landscape planning issues. Students participated in socio-economic surveys on abovementioned challenges. They were actively involved in several activities during the project implementation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Socio-economic survey on environmental protection and biodiversity issues was conducted in local communities to raise awareness in this regard. Students were actively involved in the process as well. They participated in field activities.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

The results of the completed project have a future growth perspective. Established first nursery in Racha region, will contribute to the biodiversity conservation. In the future, it will be possible to grow other varietis of trees in the nursery, which will contribute to restore biodiversity in the Khvanchkara varieties distribution area.

Gender Focus

Women from local community were actively involved in the implementation of the project activities. Gender balance were considered and maintained.

Policy Impact

Young plants will be used in line with relevant environmental legislation. No policy impact is expected.

Project Results

In Kvemo Joshkha (Ambrolauri Municipality), a nursery was arranged with irrigation system, simple construction greenhouse (40 square meters), relevant equipment for nursery and inventory storage building. There are 225 Sochi, 215 Chesnut and 135 Walnut young trees planted.

Cooperative "Nergi" was founded by the teachers of Chrebalo public school (2 women and 1 man). Representatives of the local community joined the cooperative.

In agreement with the local school authorities and trustee of Chrebalo City Council, reforestation of the eroded areas in the region with young trees is planned for biodiversity conservation.

With a pre-compiled questionnaire, local public school students and other students conducted socio-economic survey in local community (197 respondent with different ages). Establishment of the first nursery in the region is highly appreciated by the local community for the following: 1) Restoration of biodiversity in the Khvanchkara distribution zone; 2) Sustainable forest management; 3) Agro-ecology development; 4) Proper planning and management of environmental activities; 5) The need for landscape planning; 6) Planned mapping; 7) Raising the ecological culture of the local community; 8) Improvement of the socio-economic conditions of the local community to some extent.

Based on the field surveys, a map of the eroded areas of the region was compiled and planting areas with young trees grown in the nursery was planned in agreement with relevant local authorities.

Cooperative "Nergi" plans memorandum agreement with local public schools to start bilateral cooperation in the field of biodiversity and environmental protection. Field surveys identified the functions of the region's landscapes and a landscape map was created.

A project information flyer was compiled and printed.
