Project Characteristics and Results

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

1.1 18 socially vulnerable households will be selected for pilot project; 1.2 18 energy efficient stoves will be produced and installed at the selected households. 2.1 Hazelnut shell supplies for one year (3 tonnes per household) will be procured; 2.2 Hazelnut shell supplies will be supplied to 18 selected households; 3.1 With the help of hired experts we will prepare standard instruction where some simple advice will be given to the population for using cheap and easy access materials (nut shell, carton boxes for eggs) for improved building energy efficiency. 3.2 Using our hired expert we will develop a standard budget, which reflects the calculation of the price for energy-efficient technologies on 1 m2. etc. 3.3 Some simple energy efficient solutions will be practiced for the selected 18 households.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

At the initial stage of the project we will prepare information about the project, its activities, goals and results. We will hold opening session in all the three target municipalities ? we will introduce the project and its objectives to our target communities.

Gender Focus

During our projects, we pay special attention at involvement of youth through eco educational centres we operate and female groups we form. Special attention will be paid at involving women in the information meetings and generally project implementation process. Since in the mountainous areas in Ajara women spend more time at home (especially in the winter when men often travel for seasonal jobs) they are usually responsible for fuel and stove operation at home. Respectively it is very important to involve them in the issues of energy efficient fuel and stoves. Special attention will be paid to the single mother families when selecting the project beneficiaries. At the same time men are more involved in the stove and house construction and improvement processes ? therefore they will be involved more in the meetings and processes concerning standards and improvements towards more energy efficient buildings.

Notable Community Participation

The proposed project has been prepared based on few year experience of closely working with the communities and local authorities of the three target municipalities in Ajara. The three municipalities were actively involved in the needs identification process. During the process we paid special attention at involvement of youth through eco educational centres we operate. Special attention will be paid at involvement of youth into the capacity building and awareness raising activities of the project.

Capacity - Building Component

We will hold 30 meetings to disseminate the knowledge and printed materials to the population. We will raise their awareness regarding the benefits of energy efficient technologies. We will hold one 3 days training session for artisans that will be involved in the stove production process. With the support of the workshops we will continue supplying the population with the energy efficient stoves. Also, we will inform the local population about the standard budgets and construction instructions prepared during the project and provide simple solution that can be used by the community for building more efficient houses or improving the existing one.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

the project envisages setting up 2 workshops for producing energy efficient stoves in Keda and Khulo municipalities, while with the support of our NGO there is already operating a workshop in Shuakhevi Municipality. With the support of the workshops we will continue supplying the population with the energy efficient stoves. Also, the standard budgets and construction instructions prepared during the project will be used by the community for building more efficient houses or improving the existing one.

Project Results

1.1 Up to 7 000 (3500 men and 3500 women) persons have received information about the benefits of the use of energy efficient technologies through meetings and printed materials;
2.1 Two new workshops are set up and functional in Khulo and Keda for producing energy efficient stoves;
3. 1 18 socially vulnerable households are using energy efficient stoves;
3. 2 Emissions from the stoves in the target households are decreased at least twice.
4. 1. 18 socially vulnerable households are using low emission fuel for their stoves;
- Better air quality in the room as the air flow is regulated in the hazelnut stove, while in regular stoves to burn fuel wood more oxygen is necessary;
- Less ash than while burning fuel wood, easy to maintain;
- Twice cheap than fuel wood;
- Twice less fuel wood required.
5.1 Standards for more energy efficient buildings are developed and introduced to the local population;5..2. 18 households have more energy efficient houses.
