Neandros Island Ghost Net and Coral Protection
Neandros Island Ghost Net and Coral Protection
The Marmara Sea is a very special inner sea with its different oceanographic and ecological characteristics and geomorphological structure. It is connecting the Black Sea and the Mediterranean with two narrow straits. The Biodiversity of the Marmara Sea has features from both seas and forms a migration route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. It is especially important for pelagic species with economic importance for accommodation, feeding and spawning. The Marmara Sea, along with the Dardanelles and the Istanbul Straits, serve as biological corridors, barriers and air conditioning between the Aegean Sea and the Black Sea. Academic studies have determined that some coral species form intense communities around the Prince Islands. Some of these species are endemic to the Mediterranean. There are two species in particular, deep sea species (Paramuricea macrospina and Spinimuricea klavereni); both begin to appear at the shallowest 50 m deep and are rare and rarely seen in areas deeper than 50 m in depth. From 20 meters on the Marmara Sea these species begin to be seen as relatively common and frequent communities.

Studies have shown that the Prince Islands are home to many species of coral and gorgon communities in the Marmara Sea, and these species are formed communities of habitats here and provide an ovipositional area.

Today, the Marmara Sea is facing serious problems such as coastal pressures, maritime transport, and lack of oxygen, and urgent measures need to be taken. Approximately 26% of the population, 50% of the industry, 47% of the port activities are in Marmara. The results of the investigations indicate that species diversity is decreasing in the Marmara Sea.
