Towards building a sustainable honey enterprise in Canaries, Saint Lucia

This PG will build the capacity of the members of the grantee to develop and manage apiaries. Members will undertake primary and secondary research and convene meetings and workshop as part of the planning process. This group has been assigned to a more developed SGP apiculturist (Orising Brothers) to help them to build their capacity over the next three months. If the grantee completes the training successfully, a FG will be considered to establish one or two apiaries.

Notable Community Participation

Two young men will be taught the skills of honey bee farming over a three week period after which they will be expected to design a project for establishing one to two apiaries.

Replication of project activities

We have now adopted the concept of training new grantees through internships and practical sessions with successful grantees.

Project Results

This project met its objectives by training seven persons from the village of Canaries (2 women and 5 men) in basic apiculture. They were introduced to both the theory and practical aspects of apiculture and visited a working apiary where they participated in practical sessions. Subject matter included biology and life cycle of bees; their morphology; their habits; queens and drones; and feeding patterns. They were also able to participate in harvesting honey from existing hives.

During project implementation a total of 4 persons were employed (2 women and 2 men) who provided transportation services; planning and organising workshops; practical sessions, and refreshments over a period of ten days. The total income derived from this project by community service providers was US$4350 (US$1031 to women and UE3319 to men).

The two main project outputs were:

(i) Seven persons were trained in basic apiculture and are ready to establish at least two apiaries in
their community; and

(ii) A Full Grant project application was submitted for the next phase of the project.

Lesson: GEF SGP UNDP should design a process to use past grantees as often as possible for training new grantees and providing them with mentoring options.
