"Promoting economic empowerment and strengthening the capacity of women with disabilities to adapt to climate change in Wuli".

The project aims to work with persons of disabilities specifically women to address climate change issues that affect their livelihoods. Most disable women in Wuli East and Wuli West cannot read or write and as such find it difficult to understand climate messages written. As such they can?t take precautionary measures towards climate change effects.
The plights of persons with disabilities especially women are in most cases ignored and not considered in climate change programs. As such they continue to remain side line in relevant matters that even affect their lives.
Persons with disabilities mainly the three major disabilities identified in the Upper River Region North that is visual impairments, physical disabilities and hearing Impairments needs innovative ways to communicate climate information and knowledge to them.
As such the project will use the creative arts, theatre and music, by persons with disabilities themselves to promote awareness on issues related Climate Change and the environment.

Policy Influence

This project seeks to enhance the capacity of Disabled women to cope with the impacts of climate change on their livelihoods by providing them with skills on alternative forms of livelihoods/ It also seeks to enhance their understanding of climate change and how it impacts on their lives. The project will support nd influence the government policy on Disabled persons.

Project Results

- The main goal of the project is to empower with Persons with Disabilities specifically Disabled Women to cope with the negative impacts of climate e change in one of the most remote regions of The Gambia.

- A Needs Assessment was conducted for 130 women with Disabilities to find out their specific needs in terms of the projects' objectives. 130 women took part in the assessment mainly in the form of structured interviews and from that total, 100 women with disabilities were shortlisted. Based on criteria such as the Severity of Disability, 100 women were finally selected as project beneficiaries.

- !00 Disabled women were selected from the 2 districts of Wuli (Wuli East and West) and trained on soap and powered detergent making in the villages of Nyakoi and Baja Kunda. The training was on ways of making soap and detergents which could easily be sold in the local markets to earn incomes for disabled women who traditionally depended on farming for a livelihood.

- A training session was conducted for 12 theater groups and traditional communicators on message development targeting women with disabilities. The sessions included the development of climate change messages and ways and means of coping with its impacts. The training was aimed at behavioral change ad to prepare the participants as Change Agents in their respective communities.

- At the conclusion of the training, the different threater groups develop messages on climate change - its causes, impacts and mitigation measures available to communities which were disseminated all across Wuli District - both East and West.

- 100 women with disabilities had their skills and grandstanding of Climate Change enhances and they acquired skills such as soap making and petty trading ls to improve their livelihoods.
