Mountain Community Climate-smart Living Space Building in Nu River Valley, Northwest Yunnan
The project sites are located in Fugong county, which is the core area of the Three Parallel Rivers WHS. The county covers 2756km2 with 104300 total population. There are over 20 ethnic minority groups living there. Among them, Lisu people accounts for 74% of the total population. The county is the national key poverty alleviation county. There are 16100 deep poverty population in this county with net income less than 875CNY($127). Farming is dominant the local economy and there are small part of husbandry, forestry and mining industry. The average income is 3894CNY ($564).
Main problems:
1. Traditional fire pit consumes large amount of firewood with low combustion efficiency, high carbon emission and time and labor consuming.
2. Traditional fire pit generate large amount of smoke which causes indoor air pollution and respiratory disease for local people.
3. Poor population relies on natural resources and the conflict between economy development and nature conservation is outstanding. Mono-culture causes land degradation and increases geological disaster risks.
Solutions/activities:
1. demonstrate 100 air-return stoves with design of Lisu culture characters to replace traditional fire pit in 4 villages
2. Plant firewood forest to protect original forest and develop agro-forestry to increase the local income
3. Provide training to local people regarding climate change, energy conservation and emission reduction, indoor air pollution and health, forest fire prevention and agricultural biodiversity; develop technical guideline and project brochure
4. conduct Eco-tourism evaluation and planning
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. Through energy-saving stoves, 243cube meters firewood saved per year, equal to 0.8 ha. of forest saved. 293.46 tons of CO2 reduced per year.
2. 6.7 ha. of firewood forest planted which can sequestrate 6.7 tons of CO2; through agro-forestry, 100 households benefited and income increased 30000-50000CNY ($4300-$5200)
3. About 1000 people trained including 500 women and 100 youth; 100 brochures disseminated and 100 billboard made
4. Potential Eco-tourism site and demonstration households identified and preliminary Eco-tourism plan developed
