China Snow Leopard Conservation Network Capacity Improvement Project
China Snow Leopard Conservation Network Capacity Improvement Project
Snow leopard in China are mainly living alpine and sub-alpine region between altitude 3000m to 5800m. China has over 60% of the global snow leopard habitats covering about 1.1million km2 area. Snow leopard habitats mainly distribute in seven provinces and autonomous regions including Xinjiang, Tibet, Qinghai, Sichuan, Gansu, Inner Mongolia and Yunnan. There are 26 governmental nature reserves cover 22% of snow leopard habitats (around 400,000km2). Snow leopard habitats outside nature reserves are mainly the grassland areas of Tibetan and Kazak ethnic minority people. Due to the wide range of snow leopard habitats in China, efficient conservation needs unite more stakeholders, establish more flexible cooperation mechanism and implement targeted conservation action to meet the gap. The grantee Shanshui Conservation Center took the lead to establish the China Snow Leopard Conservation Network in 2015, which joined by 20 organizations including NGOs, academic institutes and local government.

Main problems:
1. The China Snow Leopard Conservation Network is loosely organized, which hinder the cooperation between members, the progress of work and the sustainable development of itself. This may cause the high cost of network maintenance and affect the potential development so that the national integral target of snow leopard conservation cannot be achieved.
2. Due to different working experiences and education background of practitioners, lacking of communication and cooperation and the use of different method of investigation, it's difficult to consolidate and compare data information to guide the conservation actions. There is an urgent need to enhance the consolidation and share of knowledge, lessons learned and case studies, standardize investigation methodology through the network.
3. Conservation groups such as nature reserve administrations, researchers, NGOs, local communities and urban volunteers need scientific guidance and easy-to-use tool to avoid the blindness and randomness of conservation. The existing technology handbook needs to be widely promoted and communicated.

Solutions/activities:
1. organize network member organizations' workshop to formulate vision, goals, strategy and cooperation mechanism framework
2. organize the 3rd snow leopard international forum
3. develop snow leopard investigation and conservation method, toolkit and training materials for different level's users
4. provide indoor and field training to network members and potential member organizations
5. provide to practitioners of local environment organizations, nature reserve administrations and local communities

Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. China Snow Leopard Conservation Network Constitutions formulated and China Snow Leopard Conservation Network annual work plan developed; the network operates efficiently
2. The 3rd snow leopard international forum successfully organized and 50 people participated in, which was reported by social media and at least 5 mainstream media
3. Snow Leopard Conservation Project Design and Implementation Guideline and 4 toolkit developed and translated into Tibetan and Kazak; snow leopard conservation training materials and video developed and translated into Tibetan and Kazak
4. 100 network members trained and 20 become trainers for other trainees
5. 24 people from local environment organizations, nature reserve administrations and local communities trained with conservation knowledge and methods
6. the members of network increased 10 including 8 nature reserve administrations
