Sichuan Xinlong County Snow Leopard Community Conserved Area Establishment and Snow Leopard Conservation Network Outreach Project
The project site is located in Ganzi prefecture of Sichuan, in the middle of north of Saruri mountains. This area received little attention regarding biodiversity conservation. However, the grantee organization started wildlife investigation in 2015 and found 7 animals of the cat family and 11 ungulate species. It was the first time that snow leopard and Felis bieti were found in this area, which proved that biodiversity in this area is very rich. The local population in project site are Tibetan people and their main income comes from cordyceps sinensis collection, out-migrating for working and yak breeding.
Main problems:
1.It's lacking of the population information of local snow leopard so that lacking of strategy support to conservation
2.There is a conflict between snow leopard and local animal husbandry as well as cordyceps sinensis business, especially in summer and cordyceps sinensis collection season.
3. Community conservation is based their religion and tradition but lacks of scientific technology
4. Government conservation is still at the beginning of research and experiment and lacks of project to support felid landscape conservation
5. It's lacking of communication so that public know little about snow leopard conservation, which is not conductive to long term conservation fund raising.
Solutions/activities:
1. conduct snow leopard habitat survey and develop snow leopard conservation plan in Xinlong county 2. establish local conservation team
3. provide capacity building training to local conservation team
4. develop conservation action plan
5. stakeholder and community implement action plan
6. establish Snow Leopard China social media platform and operational team for communication
Anticipated results/outcomes:
1. a snow leopard conserved area tentatively established covering 200-300km2 and 500 local people influenced
2. a 8-10 people conservation team established with rotated team member and multi-stakeholders including local government, temple and community. 30-50 on-line and off-line volunteers participated in snow leopard conservation communication work
3. about 110-130 local people and volunteers trained and had the skills of infrared camera monitoring, human-animal conflict investigation and social media communication
4. a conservation plan accepted by multi-stakeholders
5. regular patrolling and monitoring conducted by local community and conservation plan implemented at snow leopard conserved area
6. about 50000-100000 people influenced by social media
