Local Community as First Line of Defence in Protecting Marine Ecosystem
The Gulf of Aqaba is well-known as a ecosystem where more than 300 hard and soft corals, and more than 510 species of fish have been recorded. Scientific reports indicate that the state of coral reef ecosystems faces many risk, threatnening their distribution and existance. On the other hand, Aqaba is characterized as being the only sea port of Jordan, through which most of the import and export activities are carried out. There are also many interests on the beach area such as industries, ports, tourism and investment projects, public beaches and those of private use.
Due to the importance of Aqaba Gulf ecosystems, many marine activities have emerged that have enhanced the effectiveness of the socio-economic ecosystem, including the fishermen community, the owners of glass boats and the diving centers. Especially in the coastal area and close to the extension of natural coral reefs and hence the idea of providing support to a group of community groups in Aqaba. The idea of supporting these communities linked to the coastal area within the city of Aqaba will enhance the protection and preservation of ecosystems in addition to their active role in promoting the social and economic situation in the presence of Aqaba Marine Park, which is the only marine reserve in Jordan. Support will change the way these communities interact with the marine environment and strengthen their role in protecting marine biodiversity.
