Innovation in Solar Power Technologies through the Establishment of LED Cottage Industry
Innovation in Solar Power Technologies through the Establishment of LED Cottage Industry
Like most rural areas in Jamaica, in Princess Field community, most residents do not have access to
affordable energy and are faced with high electricity costs. The energy used by households and small and micro businesses in the community is all fossil fuel based. Furthermore, the lack of livelihood alternatives yields a bleak picture for the future of its residents, especially the youths and women.
This variety of fuels used to generate electricity all have some impact on the environment and tandard of living among the residents. To achieve sustainable management, efficient use of environmental resources and socio-economic objectives that are important to the community including employment for women, men and youth, the project will seek to address issues related to
climate change by establishing a Renewable Energy and LED Cottage Industry to contribute to the reduction of the energy required for lighting and reduce CO2 Emissions while empowering community members with marketable skills.

Policy Impact
A project of this nature can be replicated or scaled up. It envisages that the Princess Field LED base Product Cottage Industry will be used as a demonstration Project for other groups/Agencies in Jamaica. Any Government, Non-Governmental Organisations or public Agencies can benefit from this project through the dissemination of information and site visit to the Industry. Moreover, the project will serve as a source of motivation as community residents and groups will want to replicate for personal as well as community purposes. In addition, our collaboration with the technical team of the JMITF and CMU will identify best talents and provide exposure, nationally and internationally, as the Project expands.
