Belau National Museum (BNM) Energy Efficiency Program
*Note: Originally PLW/SGP/OP6/Y5/CORE/2018/01
The Belau National Museum will to be part of the national initiative to reduce our carbon
footprint to mitigate the impact of Climate Change. Usage of renewable alternative sources
of energy will reduce the consumption of fossil fuels by our institution. It is critical to
implement the recommendations from the 2018 Energy Assessment and change individual
behavioral changes are also important in our daily work. Simple activities like taking out
plugs for electronic devices before leaving work, turning off lights as we leave rooms or
when rooms are not in use that we would like the staff and our visitors to become more
conscious about. Physical improvements to better seal gaps in walls and doors and
retrofitting our lighting systems with LED lights will reduce energy usage. An awareness
campaign and staff cooperation will help to lower our energy usage. Upgrading our
infrastructure with solar panels will greatly reduce energy consumption by up to 61% to
determine how we can conserve energy in the building. It is critical for the collections to
keep temperatures at a constant level to preserve them for the long term, this includes
artifacts, insect specimens and plant specimens. These are national treasures that require
our utmost attention to safeguard for future generations. To maintain the temperatures and
ensure we are optimizing the energy used to do so is our goal.
Our proposal has two main components: (1) Develop and Implement an Energy Efficiency
Awareness Campaign; (2) Implement the BNM 2018 Energy Assessment. We believe that
our effects will make a great contribution towards Energy Efficiency for the Belau National
Museum and the Republic. Energy savings can then be focused on our programs for the
community.
