Promoting organic farming at local level by teaching communities to produce organic fertilizers as a method for restoring soil and increasing crops yields
In Kazakhstan, about 60% of the land is recognized as degraded, and the best method to restore the fertile layer of the earth is to use bio fertilizers and bacteria. To restore degraded lands, approximately 1 ton of BioGumus per 1 ha is required.
Project aims to train farmers, members of the local community, peasants, owners of greenhouses, rural residents, students of specialized universities and other interested parties through theoretical and practical seminars in the processing of organic waste and production BioGumus/bio-fertilizers. By the end of education students will have technical documentation and necessary tools for starting a business to turn organic wastes in bio-fertilizers. Existing EcoFermer Educational Center will be technically enhanced with equipment and mini-laboratory to ensure year-round workshops and production of bio-fertilizers. The grantee will conclude contracts with those farmers, who will be willing to sell produced BioGumus. California worms that are included to the tool set are rapidly multiplying, thus farmers will be able to produce more BioGumus and increase their profits through organic waste recycling.
On average, one ton of organic waste contains about 50 m3 of methane CH4. Since methane greenhouse effect is 24 times potent than CO2, organization assumes 600,000 m2 of CO2 monthly reduction of the greenhouse effect by the end of the project.
In two years? time from the processed 500 tons of waste, 250 tons of BioGumus per month could be used to revive 250 hectares of degraded lands.
