IMPROVISE TODAY, CONSERVE FOR TOMORROW- ST. PETER?S WATER HARVESTING AND STORAGE COMMUNITY PROJECT
The St Peter?s Community has been rapidly expanding over the years, resulting in an increased population and a number of sub-communities particularly due to housing and other infrastructural developments. Whilst this augurs well for the community, much emphasis has not been placed on ensuring that the environmental awareness and key activities towards environmental preservation are given due attention. With development in the physical sphere, not much environmentally friendly programmes and projects, if any, have been developed or implemented. The young people are therefore growing up with little knowledge, and therefore little or no interest, in what entails in the environment around them; the issues, challenges and potential impacts on their surroundings and livelihood. Not much has been done to address the fact that structures and facilities should be put in place to mitigate against the possible challenges that can be derived from the depletion, scarcity, or contamination of the main water sources. Essentially, there are a number of key public places that would be deemed unfit for use by the residents due to the absence of water storage and other key facilities. These include the primary school, health centre, day care and preschool and especially the community centre which is designated as an emergency shelter. Operating these sites without water storage is in itself pose potential threats and should be addressed and corrected appropriately through education, awareness and installation of water storage facilities.
