Nurturing a Climate Smart Agricultural system on a hill-side farmland to increase affordable local food production on Mahe Island.
The project aims to assist the Local food Producers based on hill side agricultural land in purchasing basic farming equipment to structure their land into different patterns that will be fit for cultivating a variety of adaptive crops such contour terracing, flat land areas, raised beds, drains, deep holes between rocks as well as removing rocks that are seen as barriers to maximizing land use. Rehabilitation of the soil with mulching machine, separate the top soil while preparing the land so it can be used later when planting. The machines will be very useful to the farmers as they spend most of funds from big loans on excavation works. This will allow them in investing more in consumable food production that will grow well on the hill. Additionally, the farmers aim at planting other native and endemic trees in between their farming practices and on unused land as they plan in helping reducing land degradation on and around their farmlands. The project farm area will equally be used an educational site or open learning area for students, community and hopefully interested tourists who can also witness production as well as buy fresh products from the farmers. Knowledge management will also be an important component of this project
