Engaging Government, Civil Society and the Private Sector in Policy Dialogue on the SDGs
Focused on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6, 7, 13, 14 and 15, the project seeks to provide a platform to enable dialogue between policy makers, civil society organizations and the private sector. These five SDGS are briefly described below:
? 6 ? Clean water and sanitation: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
? 7 ? Affordable and clean energy: Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
? 13 ? Climate action: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.
? 14 ? Life below water: Conserve and sustainable use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
? 15 ? Life on land: Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
The project will involve development of a national dialogue platform to discuss each of the issues detailed below in Table 1. The dialogue platform will afford discussion about the issues through various media and aim to find answers to the following questions:
1. Are these issues being adequality addressed through national policies and planning?
2. Where are the deficiencies?
3. How can the deficiencies be filled?
4. Where have we been successful?
5. How can success stories be replicated throughout the country?
6. What new policies, programs or initiatives are needed and how can CSOs and the private sector participate?
The project will occur in New Providence, Grand Bahama and Exuma. In New Providence and Grand Bahama, the activities will be focused on University campuses on each island. In Exuma, the University will partner with the Exuma Foundation to host activities there.
The project aligns with the Bahamas SGP Country Programme Strategy for Utilization of OP6 Grant Funds with respect to CSO-government dialogue platforms. The Strategy noted that ?The development of an effective CSO-government dialogue platform may be beneficial to promoting CSO and community engagement in the national implementation of international conventions?. This project seeks to develop such a platform with its first opportunity for dialogue covering the environmental SDGs that relate to several multilateral environmental agreements, including the Convention on Biological Diversity and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
