Fishing is the mainstay of coastal communities like Harena and the activity is dominated by men. Usually the practice is artisanal fishery. Artisanal fishery is conducted by local traditional fishermen along the coast in the relatively shallow waters. It involves wooden or fiberglass boats with a maximum length of 15-18 m. Artisanal fishermen can employ a combination of different gears (beach seine, gill nets, hook and line) and stay at sea over a period of 7 to 10 days per trip. There is a shortage of handling facilities used by fishermen, therefore, after the end of the fishing trip they immediately land on the shores of the major port cities of Massawa or Assab. This leaves no fish for their family members waiting in their home villages. Women and kids cannot fish themselves as the fish are not found near the shore. Therefore, ironically these communities despite their proximity to the shore are not consuming enough seafood to get by. This caused malnutrition among the coastal communities. The project will be implemented in the coastal village of Harena, in the Sub Region of Gela?elo, Northern Red Sea Region, where the most efficient FAD will be constructed and deployed by the communities under supervision of experts from Massawa College of Marine Science and Technology (MCOMSAT), Ministry of Marine Resources (MMR) and National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW). These institutions give technical backstopping to the Harena Community Development Committee. The main objective of the project is to construct a Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs), to attract fishing near the villages thus making fishes accessible to women improving their livelihoods in the village and to ease fishing pressure on nearby Coral reefs/Mangrove ecosystems thus helping in conservation of biodiversity. The specific objectives are to boost the involvement of women in fishing and; to build the capacity of fishermen on how to build Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs); and to reduce the burden of fishing. The main project activities are; site selection; construction and deployment of FADs; train communities on the sustainable use and maintenance of FADs; monitoring and/or follow up and evaluation; Mangrove plantations i.e. nursery for fish breeding and multiplication. The project is community based and community managed, and its sustainability will be assured with full participation of the community. Therefore, in kind contribution of the community will be in the form of labour. Community members will play a great role in the implementation of the project and the subsequent monitoring and evaluation. Besides, they will be involved in a mangrove afforestation programme which is also part of the project. The project?s duration is 24 months. The project needs a total of ERN 1,170,600.00 or USD 78,040.00. Of which Contribution of GEF/ SGP is USD 39,020.00, Northern Red Sea Government Ministries will parallel co-finance ERN 266,500.00 or USD 17,766.67, Harena community?s contribution is ERN 318,800.00 or USD 21,253.33. There will be strict monitoring and follow-up of all activities during project implementation. Data collection and documentation will also be done to further scale-up and replicate the project.
