Hawasa Lake Ecosystem Conservation
The project is located at Sidama Zone, Hawasa Zuria District, Shamenasafara, Dore Bafano, & Kareso Dela Kebeles, North Western of Hawasa Lake Catchment. The Woreda town is called Dore Bafana and the Project site is about 15 Km from Awassa Town. The mountain to North West of Hawasa Lake ecosystem with remnant forests stretches across the Kebeles serves as one component of life support system. The target communities are involved in mixed agriculture. With the project to be supported by GEF SGP UNDP, ADBC targeted on rehabilitation and conservation of degraded lands, interventions of livelihood diversification, carry out capacity building and energy efficient technology enhancement to improve the well-being of communities.
This project has four primary goals: The first one is to equip local communities to rehabilitate the degraded lands that subsequently contribute to sustainable natural resources conservation, the second goal is to improve livelihood of communities through alternative-income-generating activities, the third goal is to build capacity building of community through diversified knowledge and skill development programs and the fourth goal is to enhance energy efficient technologies. With these primary goals, this project will achieve a number of secondary objectives, like improving food security at the household level, empowering women and girls, creating incentive to enhance natural resource conservation and agricultural productivity
