Native Forest Nursery & Biogas Project
Native Forest Nursery & Biogas Project
The Kauhala Iteni Eco-Friendly Group aims to re-plant native plants in the area to revive the dwindling native plant population with a focus on the mangroves found along the coastline of this village. Makave has played a key role in supplying mangrove seedlings to the rest of the Kingdom in aiding the country in its endeavor to replant mangroves in areas where mangrove numbers are down such as the Fangauta catchment area of mainland Tongatapu and various other sites where mangroves planting projects have taken place, mainly in the mainland of Tongatapu. Also due to its location next to the lagoon, the village is home to fishing pigs that have been established as a cause of damage to mangroves especially the young seedlings that are growing. The village has come together with the group in hopes of keeping their domestic pigs under control by discouraging the active roaming of their pigs by placing them in designated pens aimed at the establishment of bio-gas to be used by the village.
