SUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT AND WATER SECURITY PROJECT
Houma Village Council aims to decrease the land degradation in the area by discouraging the overuse of fertilizers and pesticides by the villagers. Houma is home to agricultural community that is renowned in Tonga for their planting of mainoke ( also known as casava and tapioca) the villagers also plants other root crops for sustenance and for marketing. However, due to this strength in agricultural uses of the land, the villagers has noticed a decline the soil quality and diminishing native fruiting and flowering plant population. This project aims to encourage the villagers to organically farm root crops and replant the native fruit and flowering plants in hopes of reversing the damages done unto their soil. Thus the project is supplying water tanks to one block of the four blocks of settlement in the village in hopes of kick starting a trend of organic farming and replanting of native plants in the area.
