Project Characteristics and Results
Project sustainability
The implementation of the project will lead to social and economic benefits. Around 1,2000 men and 1,500 women will benefit from the project implementation. Around 10 ha of land will be set as demo-plots within 3-5 local farmers. Above 350kg of sainfoin and 40kg of alfa-alfa will be harvested in first year of projet implementation, out of which 50% or 125kg of sainfoin and 20kg of alfa-alfa will be distributed to 5-7 local farmers for free, and the other 50% will be sold at the local markets, thereby generating around 2,000 tajik somoni (200USD) and 4,000 tajik somoni (400USD) in 2nd year by each local farmer. The seeds multiplication project at the community level will positively impact on 70 ha of pastureland locate in high-altitudes of target villages. The additional income of 200USD and then 400 USD generating by each local farmer and employment creation for 10 womem and 15 men will improve the social living conditions of family members living in the target area, restore agricultural land and pastures in eroded and degraded lands, which will allow them to get additional financial benefits from the sale of their products. It is seen environmentally sustainable project as the project activities mainly focused on restoration and rehabilitation of the high-altitude pasturlands ? as potential areal of snow leopard, and increase the high-quality seeds and fodder products for domestic livestock, thereby decreasing pressure on the wild-growing pasturelands, and increasing opportunity to protect/ conserve the pasturelands in snow leopard habitat. The civic awareness and public advocacy campaigns will cover a total of 200 schoolchildren of target villages and around 3,000 people will increase their knowledge and information about snow leopard and its habitat.
Policy Influence
The proposed project is of great importance for the restoration and rehabilitation of high-mountain pastures, which are snow leopard ecosystems, reducing the loss of biodiversity in the Jamoat Shugnov of the Khovaling region. Many objective and subjective factors put these alpine pastures on the verge of extinction, which has a negative effect on the snow leopard population.
