Youth Action: capacity development marathon

The main goal of the project is to develop capacities of youth activists, movements, networks and organizations towards their participation and impact on sustainable development agenda, expanding opportunities for effective involvement of CSOs in GEF SGP projects and activities. The tasks of the project include organization of Knowledge Fair, trainings, environmental actions and events, etc. As well, project experts contribute to maintenance of on-line knowledge platforms and portals; provide quality content and analytical articles.

Project Characteristics and Results

Gender Focus

Gender equality is a part of project policy and all parties participate in project activities on equal base and benefit from project results.

Notable Community Participation

The project co-organized three national forums on youth leadership and sustainable development with the participation of 1,000 people. Representatives of the CSO Network "Education for Sustainable Development" were included in the working group of the UNECE International Initiative "Education for Sustainable Development" (began its work in February 2020), which allowed to use the acquired knowledge during the implementation of GEF SGP projects and to constantly develop, taking into account the international experience of working with youth.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The project contributes to the socio-economic development of communities by providing local communities with information on the opportunities and activities of the GEF SGP in Ukraine, which in turn increases the chances of cooperation with SGP GEF and obtaining additional funding for local communities in certain SGP GEF landscapes.

Policy Impact

The project experts took part in the Parliamentary Hearings to determine the priorities of the environmental policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for the next five years and submitted proposals to the draft Resolution of the Parliamentary Hearings.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

To promote public awareness, the project held a number of forums, trainings and consultations with participants and partners of GEF SGP projects, as well as supported the work of web portals of the CSO Network, SGP knowledge platforms. In addition, 1,250 copies of game information materials on sustainable development goals were published and distributed.

Project Results

The main goals of the project were achieved:
1. Participation in the Parliamentary Hearings on determining the priorities of the environmental policy of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine for the next five years. Proposals for the draft Resolution of the Parliamentary Hearings were submitted, the recommendations of which should be taken into account during the GEF-7 SGP Strategy.
2. Research was conducted and proposals prepared on environmental, socio-economic, cultural characteristics of the GEF SGP landscape of Zhytomyr and Kyiv Polissya, opportunities and needs for scaling and replication of GEF SGP initiatives.
3. Eight existing GEF SGP projects were monitored.
4. Two trainings for teachers were held, three national forums on youth leadership and sustainable development and two consultations with participants and partners of GEF SGP projects were co-organized.
5. Draft methodological recommendations for teachers on the organization of work on climate change and protection of the ozone layer were developed.
6. The work of web portals of the CSO Network (www.zelena.org.ua, www.ecoosvita.org.ua, www.sgpinfo.org.ua) was supported; more than 35 news items were published.
7. The work of the SGP knowledge platform (http://ecoacademy.org.ua/) was supported; 11 information materials were published.
8. A page for the Partnership Network "Education for Sustainable Development in Ukraine" was created on the Exposure website (https://ecoosvita.exposure.co/); 2 photo stories were published.
9. 1000 copies of the game "Sustainable Development Goals: Learn and Achieve", 100 copies of the puzzle "Sustainable Development Goals", 150 puzzles on agro-environmental issues were produced.
