KOLOMOTUA DISTRICT COMMUNITY RESILIENT, OCEAN CONSERVATION AND GREEN ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOOD.
KOLOMOTUA DISTRICT COMMUNITY RESILIENT, OCEAN CONSERVATION AND GREEN ALTERNATIVE LIVELIHOOD.
This project aims in establishing an SMA area at the Kolomotu'a Lagoon and 2 other SMA areas in the Fanga'uta Lagoon for the villages of Havelu and Tofoa. These SMA areas will contribute to the livelihoods of 11 major communities which has approximately 40,000 community members who use these lagoons.
The first part of the program will focus on consulting the communities that will take part in this project to identify alternativ e livelihoods to those who have been dependent on the ocean's resources.
The second part of the program will be the set up of four fish farms for 3 of the communities in the Kolomotu'a area. These fish farms will eventually decrease the price of the fish to an affordable cost for the communities in this project.
Coral and mangrove farms will also be part of this program to allow rehabilitating small fishes and planktons.
There will also be several awareness programs that would be carried out for the youth especially for those in primary, secondary, and high schools in the district of Kolomotu'a. This is to allow students to understand and contribute to projects with positive impacts to the environment and the future of their livelihood.

Consultations and awareness programs are incorporated in the project plan. The district council along with other stakeholders in this project will conduct these programs in each of the communities and schools that will be impacted by this project.
Notable Community Participation
The youth will be trained by the Mionistry of Fisheries and other NGOs to monitor and survey the SMA areas, the socio-economic activities of the communities taking part in the project, and their alternative livelihoods. The youth will be part of the groups that will be reporting on the progress of the project. The youth are a more active group which is why it will be beneficial to the program to incorporate monitoring and surveying training for the youth.
