Green Mrgashen: Towards alternative and clear energy

The project objective is to introduce innovative low-carbon energy solutions to enhance energy security of Mrgashen community. It aims at utilizing the high solar energy potential in the region to create enabling conditions for diffusion and commercialization of low-carbon technology in the community and beyond. Reducing energy costs will allow the community to redirect the savings for implementing other social-economic and environmental projects that will help improve the living and social conditions of the community population. Moreover, development of alternative energy will directly support the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions which is a big challenge in Mrgashen community as well.

The project aims at providing accessible and practical solutions on using the potential of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies, thereby directly contributing the community development.

The core activities of the project include:
? Installation of a 5-kW PV and a 300-liter solar thermal system in the community preschool;
? Installation of a 20-kW PV station for street lighting and replacement with 250 LED lamps;
? Insulation of the beneficiary multi-story apartment building entrance (tambour) and the roof, replacement of windows and doors and installation of LED lamps for common use areas of the building.

Project Characteristics and Results

Project sustainability

As a result of the project Mrgashen community will enhance its energy security through a set of locally adapted innovative low-carbon technologies providing sustainable energy services. Green energy sources and technologies are critical for maintaining environmental sustainability and quality of life in the face of increasing energy demand. Positive experience of saving and generating money by application of low carbon technological solutions will be widely shared among the community population. During the project it is planned to organize events dedicated to renewable energy, energy efficiency and relevant topics. The gained information will help the local population to understand the benefits of the solar systems and energy conservation.

Promoting Public Awareness of Global Environment

Information on upcoming meetings, discussions or trainings within the project activities targeted to raise awareness of the community members will be duly disseminated through announcements posted in the municipality, school, cultural center, etc. Moreover, the project results are planned to be covered through regional and mass media platforms and channels.

Replication of project activities

Taking into consideration that the issues addressed by the project are typical for rural communities in Armenia and that the project is in line with the national policy processes and strategies in the area of sustainable development and development of alternative energy and energy efficiency, it has a good potential for replication and scaling-up. Besides, the project team will widely present and disseminate results of applied practices among major stakeholders at national, regional and local levels.

Emphasis on Sustainable Livelihoods

The main goal of the project is to increase the energy independence of Mrgashen community through low-carbon and energy efficient technologies, in particular: - To cultivate an energy-saving behavior within the population of Mrgashen. - To promote the use of micro-PV stations as a feasible solution through demonstration and knowledge sharing. - To promote the application of solar energy use systems and energy conservation measures through demonstration and the continued dissemination of knowledge and practical experience. As a result of the implemented activities around 110,000 kWh of electricity will be produced through installation of PV stations, solar thermal systems as well as replacing street lighting with LED lamps will ensure saving of around 10,000 USD annually for the community. The saved funds can be directed to further enhance energy security of Mrgashen by promoting energy saving and renewable energy generation, as well as implementation of other ?green? projects in the community.

Capacity - Building Component

The project activities will be accompanied by targeted capacity building activities. In particular, capacities of local authorities and residents will be built on application of new ?green? energy technologies. A set of complex capacity building activities, including trainings, workshops, exchange visits, etc., targeted to improve locals' traditional knowledge and experience on use of renewables and energy efficiency improvement measures will be held in Mrgashen community.

Gender Focus

The project beneficiaries belong to different gender groups: the kindergarten staff is 100% women, the housing staff is 60% men, and the apartment building residents are of different social strata and age groups. The project implementation mechanisms will ensure women?s equitable access to resources and representation in decision making. The project will promote women involvement in working-groups, participation in the organized meetings, discussions and trainings at community level (at least 30% of users involved in the process will be women).

Policy Influence

The project contributes to the implementation of the national planning policies and strategies, in particular, UN 2030 Nationally Determined Contributions, SDGs and others.

Policy Impact

The project is in line with SGP Country Programme Strategy directions that contribute to the introduction and application of SD principles and good practices for environmental sustainability, climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as green economy. Moreover, the project is in line with the government program on meeting high technological, industrial and environmental standards and a competitive, inclusive, export-oriented economy.

Notable Community Participation

Within the framework of the project implementation special attention would be paid to the involvement of youth in the project. For this purpose, the project team will encourage local youth to participate in meetings, discussions and trainings to increase the level of their awareness and knowledge on the issues related to alternative energy and energy efficiency, and climate change. Moreover, during the project implementation phase the young people will be included as volunteers.

Inovative Financial Mechanisms

he project results, experience gained and lessons learned will be shared with stakeholders at the regional level (Kotayk Region authorities, rural communities) and national level (appropriate ministries, international donor organizations, etc.) through project reports, public events and media.

Project Results

The project will produce the following results:
1. Installation of 25 kW PV stations in the community and 300-liter solar thermal system in the preschool ensure over $4000 annual saving,
2. Upgrading of street lighting system, replacement of 250 streetlights with LED lamps ensures over $5000 annual saving,
3. Insulation of the beneficiary apartment building entrance and the roof, replacement of windows and doors as well as installation of LED lamps ensures $555 annual saving,
4. Introduction of EE measures and solar energy use technologies results in reduction of 14 tons of CO2 annually,
5. The community members have raised awareness about energy efficiency and use of the renewables.
