Traditional Knowledge in Community Based Forest Management.
Context:
There is increasing use of traditional knowledge in documenting cultural activities, land use and resource values for planning sustainable resource management. However such approaches have not been effectively applied in Tanzania even in situations where their value is central to the management goals of the area, such as Loliondo forest in Serengeti- Mara ecosystem. The Loliondo II forest lands in Enguserosambu Ward are a good example of forest lands that are managed collectively by the four Loita Maasai villages of Enguserosambu, Ng?arwa, Orkiu-Juu and Naan by using traditional knowledge.
About the Proponent:
The Enguserosambu Forest Conservation And Development Trust. (EFT). Was established in 2012 following extensive negotiations with the central government to gain local control and management authority for the community forest lands. Through the process, the government acknowledged that the local management authority was best suited to achieve the long term health of the community forest lands.
Project?s Primary Objective:
To document the traditional knowledge and management systems of the Loita Maasai Enguserosambu ward and to build capacity of the EFT to effectively achieves its vision and mandate to sustainably manage the Enguserosambu community forest lands for the benefit of the communities.
