Rural Agroecology Resilience Hub
As Moldova is going through a long-lasting crisis of migration, poverty, environmental problems and natural resource base degradation. Pervasive soil erosion is one of the main problems, but also growing pressure due to climate changes poses increasing risk on human and the environment. Whether extremes with longer droughts, later frosts, rare torrential rains, new varieties of crop pests - these are just a few examples of growing challenges that farmers face. In this case sustainable solutions, like organic and climate-resilient agriculture, agroforestry and agro-eco-tourism offer a hope-giving path confirmed by the UNEP 2014 scoping study on Green Economy.
GEF SGP country strategy foresees boosting innovative climate-smart agro ecology through developing thematic guides, organizing continuous education programs, informing households about good practices, implementing them at 5 ha, producing multi-culture and crop rotation, reducing CO² emissions. It a All these components are addressed and contributed to by the current project and also the Community landscape conservation component is addressed through developing a rural locality into an agro-ecological tourist interest point and marking a tourist route there.
The overall Goal of the project is Promoting Organic agriculture and agro-eco-tourism as a priority means for sustainable development of Moldova. It adopts a systemic approach working with key sector stakeholders, with legislation, with farmers, with agriculture students and the general population. The area of work extends to the who Republic of Moldova, inviting participants from all rural regions of the country, and additional specific hotspots in Chisinau - mostly targeting consumers through the awareness raising campaign and the village of Riscova through creation of the agro-ecotourism focal point.
The project is creating a model of resilient and sustainable rural development context. An important aspect is coupling organic agriculture with agro-eco-tourism in order to attract more people, diversify income, increase economic resilience and hence contribute to poverty reduction. Climate-smart agriculture alone is still dependent on the growing instability of the weather conditions, adding agro-ecological tourism to the mix makes rural community less vulnerable to unexpected shocks.
Capacity of local communities is built through skill development of farmers and agriculture students throughout multiple trainings, which include theoretical and practical components as well as inspiring study visits to examples of successful best practices. The curriculum is developed in cooperation with the Agrarian University of Moldova, independent experts, key sectorial SCOs and successful farmers. It is created and consulted with the main stakeholders, in such a manner that this curriculum can be easily used again by other organizations and especially integrated in the general program of the Agrarian University.
The project also increases the capacity of the involved partner organizations to cooperate with each other and the government. Through its legislation development and promotion component the project contributes to CSO-government interaction. It also goes beyond work on legislation, aiming to involve the National Government in a large-scale public awareness campaign promoting Agro ecology among the general population. One of the ambitious goals of this project is to create an unusual level of cooperation and mutual support among key stakeholders of the Organic Agriculture sector, which is rare in the context of mistrust, competition and corruption so pervasive in Moldova.
