Promoting adaptation measures to climate change with emphasis on the Raut river basin
The project ?Promotion of the adaptation measures to climate change with a focus on the R?ut river basin? is developed by the PA ?National Environmental Center? (CNM) in partnership with Association of Journalists for Environment and Eco Tourism from RM (AJMTEM) and with the Rediul Mare Mayoralty.
The project intervention area is the spring of the R?ut river, the Rediul Mare village, the Donduseni rayon, as well as the areas along the R?ut river in the Rediul Mare-Balti segment, on the upper course of the R?ut river (as shown in the image below).
The project is a continuation of the activities of promoting the principles of integrated water resources management in Moldova, carried out by the National Environmental Center since 2012.
The overall objective of the project Promotion of the adaptation measures to climate change with a focus on the R?ut river basin is improving the capacities of people in rural areas regarding climate resilience by planning, applying and testing adaptation measures, based on natural ecosystems, and thus reducing the economic losses of people.
Since 2012, CNM has facilitated and organized at least 10 campaigns for planting and cleaning the banks of rivers in the Republic of Moldova: Raut, Bîc, Ichel (Nistru hydrographic district) and Ciuhur, Larga, Tigheci (Danube-Prut hydrographic district and the Black Sea). So far, there have been elaborated Reports on the socio-ecological situation for the sub-basins of Bîc, R?ut, Larga and Tigheci rivers, which include fact-based data regarding the ecological pressure exerted by each locality in these sub-basins. For the Raut river, no study was conducted regarding its ecological status.
The target groups of the project are: the teaching staff and the students of the Republic of Moldova, the local public administration in the R?ut river basin, the decentralized environmental and health protection bodies in the basin, the economic agents, the local population in the R?ut basin. The beneficiary of the project is the entire population of the Republic of Moldova.
By protecting and restoring rivers, we protect clean water, creating jobs and leisure opportunities that benefit our economy and revitalize the natural heritage for future generations. Restoration of the R?ut river protection strip aims to reduce water pollution in the river and to consolidate the river banks, which will consequently reduce the muddy river and the erosion of the banks.
The main activities of the project are the following:
A. Increasing the awareness of some key players regarding climate change and reducing surface water pollution through training and practical activities:
A1. Information sessions and training of teachers in the country on the subject of climate change, through the implementation of the educational support "Climate box", developed by UNDP.
A2. Training sessions for journalists from the Republic of Moldova dedicated to climate change and challenges in the Republic of Moldova and around the world.
A3. Involvement of the population in protection measures and information campaigns regarding the value of the area
B. Application of adaptation measures to climate change and improvement of the hydrological regime of surface waters at the level of hydrographic sub-basins through rehabilitation activities of the protection strips and springs:
B1. The study of the area and the mapping of springs in the Rediul Mare region
B2. Ensure measures to minimize the degradation of water resources and aquatic biological diversity by cleaning the area of unauthorized landfills
B3. Study on the volume of water in the basin of the R?ut river.
C. Promoting the principles of innovative agroecology in the context of climate change:
C1. Rehabilitation of the mapped area, by replanting with native trees and shrubs to revitalize the habitat and save rare species of plants and birds,
C2. Restoration of the riparian strip for the protection of the waters of the R?ut river on the Rediul Mare-B?l?i portion.
The following specific results are to be achieved within the project: trained teachers in the country on the climate change adaptation measures; trained journalists on the subject of climate changes, LPAs representatives trained; inventory of springs in the area of the Râut river spring done; the degraded area of the upper river region of the R?ut river restored; the protection strips of the R?ut river on the Rediul Mare-Balti segment replanted.
