Project of Energy Conservation, Emission Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation with Traditional Knowledge of Naxi and Tibetan Communities in Northwest Yunnan
The project is planned to be implemented among 4 villages (Kegong, Yujie, Ludian, Xinzhu) in Weixi Lisu Autonomous County, Deqin County and Lijiang City. Kegong and Yujie Village are situated within Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve. All of the four villages has an average altitude of 2000 to 3000 meters. There are total of 2768 households and 11526 people in project sites, with 88 households participating in this project. The average income per capita is around 880 USD.
Main problems:
1. The Naxi and Tibetan communities in northwest Yunnan live at 2600-3200 meters above sea level. Their energy resources mainly depend on firewood to ensure their living and heating, which has resulted in high greenhouse gas emissions.
2. The types diseases emerging among communities are becoming more and more complex and the medical costs are increasing. This has caused many households return to poverty state.
3. The community lacks the ability to recognize, understand and prevent the impact of diseases and disasters caused by climate change.
Solutions and activities:
1. 30 heaters and 58 solar water heaters are going to be installed and checked in 4 communities in 2 ethnic areas in northwest Yunnan.
2. Participatory discussion on response of community level to climate change in two ethnic communities in northwest Yunnan.
3. Organize climate change training for villagers, popularize the concepts of greenhouse gases and climate change mitigation.
Anticipated results:
1. By installing solar water heaters, 176 tons of firewood will be saved each year, equivalent to 100.496 tons of standard coal, 221 tons of carbon dioxide will be reduced, and 50% of energy consumption will be cut down in the community.
2. 120 people attend the discussion on climate change. Traditional knowledge related to climate change will be consolidated and recorded as a report.
3. 120 people attended the climate change training. 120 brochures are distributed, 120 people from 6 stakeholders have improved their understanding of the relationship between greenhouse gas emissions and climate change mitigation.
