Protection Against Land/River Erosion & Floods & Economic and Institutional Development of Riverine Communities
Immediate objectives are I) combating land erosion (due to change in river course) ii) conversation of land and introduction of flood resistant crops i.e. sugar cane and rice. Iii) protection from flood iv) tree plantation v) provision of revolving loan to increase level of income and living standard. Vi) introduction of fuel efficient stoves and installation of biogas plant.
Local revenue officer, Deputy commissioner, Health Department, Livestock Department and Forest Department will be asked to coordinate with the programme. Would like to coordinate with other GEF projects. Would also like to cooperate with other similar UNDP programmes. Already Oxfam, Conern and Unicef is collaborating with Pattan.
Anticipated results: a)The level of awareness of participant communities about their problems (environmental, social and economical) and solutions has been matured. Their income level has also increased. The organizational strength of the community has developed to the extent that they can decide and implement their future projects by themselves. The position of women has been enhanced. Women groups are able to initiate dialogue for their issues and can take part in the decision making process in the village. B) 80,000 trees are planted c) 45 women and 45 men received revolving loan. D) flood damages are reduced. E) Flood resistant crops are introduced. F) The sense of community and individual interaction have been incrased and as a result ethnic and sectarian prejudices weakened. G)Physical environment has become better and health.
