Project Results
As there was illegal trade of snow leopards? skins in Nuristan province, hunting of snow leopard, youth competition was regularly conducted for killing snow leopard and poaching by farmers in order to protect livestock and local residents? behaved snow leopard as enemies of them and sometimes snow leopard could be killed due to revenge reasons.
As community has helped and participated in the implementation of the project, women were always ready to come to trainings participate in activities, raise awareness for protection of wildlife and especially snow leopard, youth and local men have helped the trainers the surveyors and in raising awareness for protection of wildlife especially snow leopard local communities have attended every activity of the proposed project eco clubs, herder education pamphlets distribution camera trapping and informing the project implementation team about the signs of the snow leopard.
WEARO has implemented this project in a good manner, as Nuristan province is one of the mountainous Provinces where staff approach was almost difficult, but WEARO has managed this very well and work with local communities for protecting snow leopard consecration and wild animals,
WEARO had the following beneficiaries of this project.
-200 Herders and200 eco clubs beneficiaries/ local schools students.
-800 local communities Members/ including men women and local elders.
-200 herder participants for snow leopard protecting education
-4000 pamphlets distribution over local communities/ 4000 local communities? members.
Long term benefits:
-Raising awareness in local communities for protecting snow leopard.
-Conserving eco systems through local herders.
-Prevention of killing local wild animals and snow leopards.
-Prevention of trading of wild animals through local government and local youngsters and
Herders.
- Community Behavior changed towards wild animals.
-Providing milestones for next eco system and wild animals conservation projects.
-Drawing the attention of local communities and local stakeholders to the lives of
Wild animals.
Lessons learned: some activities were really challenging for the project implementation team, but local residents of Nuristan province have behaved very positively and they were actively opening ways for project implementation team.
