Exploring innovative opportunities for promoting synergies between climate change adaptation and mitigation in Seychelles
This project consists of three main components that uses concomitantly innovative tasks in climate change mitigation and adaptation within the context of sustainable development and environmental protection through livelihood improvement and the creation of green jobs. Some project components will be implemented in collaboration with youths, others directly led by youths. The components encompass the areas: Acceptance of photovoltaic systems in the Seychelles, environmental sustainability in the Seychelles? business sectors, climate change and adaptation in the agricultural sector. Component 1 is divided into two parts; (i) the factors that influence the acceptance of PV in the Seychelles are unclear especially at the household level will be led by a youth. Revealing the socioeconomic and cultural reluctancy utilizing PV at the household level could help to develop strategies that promote PV installations in households, advance the general acceptance of sustainable living, and increase the ratio of renewable energy generation in the Seychelles, (ii) a 15kw PV system that consists of 56 panel will be installed at Unisey in collaboration with students to build capacity and raise awareness regarding the ease of utilization of PV systems. Component 2 aims to advance environmental sustainability in the hospitality industry and local Seychellois owned startup companies. Both components are led by youths. In the first task of component 2, strategies for reducing the ecological footprint within the hospitality sector will be developed and their implementation monitored. Domestic businesses are important to diversify the economy and to create employment opportunities in the Seychelles. Such businesses are of even greater importance when eco-products are created that assist in tackling large scale ecosystems degradation. Task 2 within component 2 of the project aims to support the utilization of organic fibers harnessed from invasive or exotic plants for the production of weaving products. Other uses for the fibers extracted would be explored within this action (e.g. organic wrapping material, paper replacement, fibers for the textile industry). This task will contribute to the progress of an ongoing existing project of ecosystem based adaptation at the University of Seychelles, whereby identified invasive or exotic plant will be processed for fibre to use in artisanal work. Component 3 focuses on the role of agroforestry in improving mitigation and adaptation of agricultural systems to climate change in the Seychelles, led by another youth. In Seychelles, a move of agricultural production from flat to hill areas is expected for the next years, bringing a risk of both a decrease in food production and degradation of the forests. A development of appropriate agroforestry systems, adapted to local land capacities and markets, is the most appropriate response to counter this trend, while providing a sustainable system of agricultural production based on soil conservation, ensuring food security, improving land use and environmental services. Incorporating multi-purpose trees on farmlands and improving its effectiveness has the potential of ensuring food security while increasing carbon habitats ? a mitigation option for climate change.
