Guides Solar Power and Sustainable Development
The BGGA serves over 2300 young girls, ages 5-15, through programmes held on New Providence, Grand Bahama, Abaco, Eleuthera, Spanish Wells, Andros, Exuma, Long Island, Cat Island and Inagua. We are therefore well-poised to be a change agent and to play an integral role in the sustainable development of our country. We are therefore applying for GEF SGP funding to:
1. Install a 4-kW grid tied solar power system, on the roof of our new headquarters, with battery back-up supply.
2. Assist the development and implementation of locally relevant environmental education modules through a revamped Camp Discovery experience.
We are currently constructing an Administration Complex which will serve as our new Headquarters. The building will house administrative offices as well as training and conference rooms. The third floor will provide dormitory style accommodation for our members from the family islands and abroad, who travel to New Providence for training and BGGA events. This new building is located just below Fort Charlotte, on the heavily travelled West Bay Street and is highly visible to the public. The South and West facing sections of the roof can accommodate up to twelve 360W solar panels which can supply over 4,000 Watts of power. Thus, the inclusion of sustainable design elements such as a solar power system on our roof will increase the public?s awareness of solar energy as a viable power source for residences and businesses.
The education and awareness components of this project may be as, or even more important, than the installation of a solar power system on our roof. It is only through awareness that we can bring about the behavioural changes that are necessary for sustainable development. Camping and caring for the environment are major components of the Girl Guide Programme. Thus, in 1973 the BGGA acquired an 8-acre campsite on Marshall Road, called Camp Discovery and guides, rangers and leaders have used this site for more than 45 years. Current camp facilities include a Brownie Hut, kitchen and dining facilities. The BGGA has recently decided to enhance the experiences at Camp Discovery. The revamped site will serve as an impetus for the retention of Brownies by utilizing the natural environment in a way that is challenging and exciting. We hope to prepare our members; young girls, women and leaders to thrive in this ever-changing world by fostering environmental awareness and motivating them to take action for a brighter future.
