Young Reporters for the Environment: Giving our Marine Environment a Voice
Issues to be addressed by the project include:
? Lack of locally-produced media about environmental issues ? pollution, biodiversity loss, climate change ? and their linkages to the SDGs;
? Lack of knowledge and awareness about these issues and their linkages to the SDGs amongst students ages 11 ? 25; and
? Lack of capacity of students to effectively communicate ideas and thoughts related to these issues and their linkages to the SDGs.
The YRE programme empowers young people to have their say on environmental issues in their locality which they feel are not being adequately addressed. It gives them an outlet for their frustrations and a platform from which to make a difference.
YRE helps participants to develop skills and acquire knowledge which will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Communication skills, individual initiative, teamwork, critical analysis, social responsibility and leadership skills are all honed through involvement in the programme.
The overall project goal is to empower young people in The Bahamas to take a stand on environmental issues, using media as their tool.
Project objectives will include:
1. Increasing knowledge about the landscape and seascape of The Bahamas and the threats they face;
2. Increasing knowledge and awareness of specific threats, i.e. pollution, biodiversity loss and climate change;
3. Increasing knowledge of the SDGs and how the specific threats are linked to them;
4. Increasing capacity in the use of media as tools to share knowledge and increase awareness about issues affecting your community and country;
5. Hands-on learning in the marine environment using effective tools, such as a mobile conservation corner and underwater livestream camera, for communications about the sea to people on land; and
6. Providing opportunities for Bahamian youth to share their viewpoints on environmental issues on a national and global scale.
