Aplication of Agro-mining techniques in Nickel rich soils as an alternative for sustainable agriculture in the mineral rich agricultural soils
Aplication of Agro-mining techniques in Nickel rich soils as an alternative for sustainable agriculture in the mineral rich agricultural soils
Phytomnig is based on the existence of special plants that have the capacity to bioaccumulate heavy metals in their tissues in concentrations several times higher than the concentration of the same element in the soil. Nickel-rich soils are present in 11-27% of territory in the southeastern part of Albania. In these areas is present the hyperaccumulator plant Alyssum murale that can accumulate up to 2% Ni in the dry biomass. Due to the high nickel concentration, these areas have low agricultural yields and tend to be abandoned. The project will provide an incentive for the cultivation of Alyssum murale in the area of Pogradec. The project will provide an alternative crop to local farmers and is expected to increase their income compared to traditional crops.
