The conservation of European Eel in Buna and Drini rivers Basin
The European eel is a critically endangered species. Since the 1970s, the numbers of eels reaching Europe is thought to have declined by around 90%. The project will be implemented in the Buna and Drini rivers basin in Albania shared with other three countries North Macedonia, Kosovo and Montenegro and will be coordinated with the project Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity at Lakes Prespa, Ohrid and Shkodra/Skadar, implemented by GIZ. The ?Sustainable Fisheries? component of this project addresses fish monitoring and ecological status of water bodies based on EU Water Framework Directive. The SGP activity will provide data mostly on glass-eel recruitments as well as silver eel capture and impact of the obstacles in the rivers like dams, fishing infrastructure, etc. The assessment of glass-eel recruitments is going to be realized for the first time in Albania and is very important for eel conservation and eel stock sustainable management.
