Protection of Ohrid Lake trout through capture and release of breeders involved in egg collection for restocking program
Lake Ohrid is a major European biodiversity hotspot situated in a trans-frontier setting on the Balkans, is a prime example for a lake with a magnitude of narrow range endemic taxa that are under increasing anthropogenic pressure. One of the iconic species of this lake is its endemic trout Salmo letnica (Koran). Both countries (Northern Macedonia and Albania) have active restocking programs for this species. In Albania, up till now, the collection of eggs/sperm involves sacrificing of individual fish after the biologic material have been harvested. The fish are allowed to be sold in the local market. This project will be carried out in close collaboration with the Governmental sponsored program of restocking and will test the capture-and-release practice. The project will refund the fisherman for the value of fish released alive after the egg collection. The project will also provide an indication of the costs involved aiming at replicating this practice in the coming years through state funds.
