Hemsin Biodiversity and Production Landscape
Hemsin Biodiversity and Production Landscape
The interviews and observations with local people in Hamshen revealed that the ecosystem services in the valley have weakened to withstand human pressure. One of the main reasons for this is the ongoing attempts to make Hamsin a tourism corridor. Another reason is the lack of protection of the habitats in the valley due to outmigration. Also, in the absence of protection statuses, serious deforestation has been taking place. The purpose of the project is to ensure the sustainability of the ecosystem services in Hamshen. The goals and activities of the project are planned in a way to serve this purpose.
There will be activities to preserve Hamshen's local flora. In order to learn about the valley's plant diversity, a flora counting will be conducted with the partnership of scientists from the Faculty of Forestry at Karadeniz Technical University. Moreover, to secure the sustainability of agricultural diversity, an ancestral seed tradeoff unit will be established. The project will also involve activities for the correct classification and preservation of these seeds. Production with ancestral seed will be supported. An organic market will be established to boost producers' motivation and profits.
An oral history study will be conducted to document the traditional production information that is under the threat of being forgotten. Especially, the knowledge of women about agricultural production will be targeted for documentation.
