Youngsters in Sustainable Fishing
Social, economic and cultural changes that are experienced by the World effect Fishery profession as well. Fishing people have difficulties adapting themselves to these changes. Fishing people, who don?t know how to act in elimination of the fundamental issues and in meeting the needs, either leave the profession or take up a second job in addition to fishing. Decrease in biodiversity and in incomes; problems in organizing and gender inequality as well as aging in the sector are the leading problems. According to the FAO statistics, 54 % of the 40.3 million fishing people are over the age of fifty and average age in the sector is sixty three, therefore only one in ten fishing people are within age bracket of 16 to 25. The project aims to ensure continuity of traditional fishing profession which is generally overlooked in Turkey and progression of the profession by ensuring participation of youth in fishing profession, and in the organization. The project, in accordance with the GEF priority of humanitarian and institutional reinforcement, will be effective in reduction of poverty, sustainable development and humanitarian and institutional reinforcement as well as implementation of priority of sustainable fishing which supports ?Blue Growth and Biodiversity? at focus.
