Promotion of Improved Cooking Stove (ICS) in Rural Communities by Establishing Training and Research Center
More than 64 percent population still depend on solid fuel to meet the energy requirement for cooking, heating and lighting, the bio-mass energy sector needs to be modernized through the promotion of energy efficient technologies for biomass energy generation, efficient utilization of available biomass resources and promote the biomass energy entrepreneurs.
The consumption of total energy for residential purpose accounts for about 80 percent in Nepal which covers mainly cooking, heating and lightening. Their access to purified and commercial energy such as electricity and LPG gas is limited due to low purchasing capacity and limited access to improved infrastructures. Looking at the total national energy consumption of the last five years, the share of the traditional energy is 75 - 90 percent and the share of commercial energy ranges between 10-25 percent. In the overall energy consumption, 77 percent energy comes from the firewood, 9 percent from the agriculture residues and animal dried dung and remaining 14 percent energy comes from imported petroleum product, coal and electricity. The annual per capita consumption of the commercial energy is 46 kilogram of oil equivalent.
The uses of firewood and biomass energy are mainly for cooking and heating purpose in rural areas and farmers. Those who use ICS for cooking are mainly used for the cooking and heating for family members. Large portion of cooking/ heating is also required for the livestock which is still outside of use of ICS.
The available ICS technologies cover mainly three types: (a) portable iron stoves: having different efficiency levels and varieties, (b) traditional mud-stoves with smoke outlets, and (c) ICS with burner, smoke outlet and low carbon emission. The iron stoves are limited in size to make them portable and do not fulfill the size requirements. The traditional improved mud-stoves are not energy efficient and are have high carbon emission. The ICS with burner is flexible in size, reduce consumption of firewood by at least 60%, less carbon emission and have efficiency of above 25% which is highest among mud-stove category. Matribhumi Burner Stove lies in this category.
In order to fulfill energy efficient cook stove technology requirements of farmers and rural population, Matribhumi Burner Stove is one of the best solutions. Project NEP/SGP/OP5/Y1/CORE/CC/12/07 (2012-14) successfully tested the Matribhumi Improved Cook stove and over the time, different prototypes of this kind of rocket stoves were tested and modified. The Matribhumi Burner stove with various modification of MICS needs to be promoted widely and to the scale. The project aimed to install 5,000 such stove throughout Nepal.
In order to promote in such a large quantity, a large numbers of entrepreneurs are required nationwide. Since this ICS is useful in household and commercial scale, and has window for innovations in design and efficiency improvement, a training and demonstration center is needed to capacitate large number of entrepreneurs and skilled human resources. The training center can both bring innovations through research and skill development.
The entrepreneurs and skilled human resources will promote Matribhumi ICS in the communities and will be able acquire significant knowledge and skills to bring further innovations. It will help in reducing carbon emission in the communities, reduce work load of women and prevent from the health hazards.
In addition to this, the local governments, CSOs and CBOs will have opportunity to train their human resources in the areas of ICS development and promotion. It will also help to fulfill one of the indicators of total sanitation. RSN is one of the campaigner organization in ODF and total sanitation campaign in different districts. The training center will help all the stakeholders involved in this campaign.
