Saipal area is valuable for many ecosystem functions and plays an important role in regulating ecosystem services that have local, national, regional, and global significance and provide ecosystem services such as soil and water conservation, carbon storage, biodiversity conservation, and cultural services. The rangeland ecosystem services are essential for existence and economic development in downstream areas and provide the basis of livelihoods for pastoralists and agro-pastoralists many of whom live in absolute poverty. Conservation of Saipal lands is necessary for both economic development and to maintain the ecosystem services. The Saipal rangeland is also very significant due to existing habitat of Yarsha Gumba- (Cordyceps sinensis) or popularly called Himalayan Viagra.
The influx of local people during Yarsha Gumba collection during collection season poses serious threat to pasture land as well as the Yarsha Gumba itself. A large number of people gather in the highland pasture for Yarsha collection also bring their food supply and other essential supply for the entire period of the collection. During their stay, they will also consume a large volume of firewood which will not only denude the highland pasture but also pollute the natural environment. Due to high competition of collection, unscientific and over collection of Yarsha Gumba resulted rapid decline of its population in the area.

Thus the project tries to systematize Yasha collection, imply rotational and rationale collection of Yarsha Gumba. It also aim to clean the pasture land through effective waste management system. The project will initiate capacity building activities to Yarsha collectors and high land shepherds and orient them on systematic management of yarsha collection and pastureland management.
