Providing Solar Power Systems as an Alternative Clean Energy Source in Adankolo Community, Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria
Project purpose delivery is by targeting two inter-related sets of challenges. The first is very low levels of household energy access, the second is impact of climate change. Better outcomes can be achieved in each area through scaling of markets for solar PV. The proposed project has three components - System 1, 2 & 3 which are the Micro power solar energy interventions, Solar Home System (SHS) and Solar Lantern Rental System (SLRS).
The project will accomplish the following; scale-up public markets for solar PV in Nigeria by creating a stronger enabling environment for the solar market in Kogi state and Nigeria with fewer barriers, avoid emissions of Carbon dioxide from petrol and diesel generators as well as emissions from kerosene wick lanterns, Improve community resilience to climate change impacts by enhancing incomes, education, and health, replace use of kerosene wick lanterns with solar lanterns, replace petrol and diesel generators with PV system, displacing over 13,000 liters of diesel generator usage for the school library over one year, displace over 46,800 liters of petrol generator usage in one year for 24 households, as well as displace over 26, 000 liters of kerosene lantern usage in a year, thereby avoiding overall carbon dioxide emission of 180.54 tons in 1 year (See annex 1) from burning of these fossil fuels in generating electricity for a period of one year. A solar micro power will be installed for the school library serving a minimum of 15,000 student population of the school, 24 additional households will be provided with access to electricity (minimum of 120 people-5 people per household) via small solar home systems within one year, a minimum of 100 people will be serve by the solar lantern rental system, displacing the use of kerosene lantern within one year. More than a total 10 kWp of installed PV capacity within one year. The total cost of the project is $28,173.8, Total amount requested by Foosteer Initiative is $24,996 which will be utilized in providing members of kogi state polytechnic school community and environs access to solar energy for electricity. Through the GEF-SGP More than $ 25 000 in finance is provided to consumers to access solar. More than $ 100 000 in private capital invested by consumers and solar service providers into solar equipment within 5 years. More than $ 65 000 in trade finance mobilized within two years. Improve community resilience to climate change impacts by enhancing incomes, education, and health.
